In regards to politics I describe myself as a Champagne Socialist. Many of those who read these emails might see me more as a Raging Capitalist. Perception is important and wow I'm struggling with my perception of the current Government and its management of this COVID-19 pandemic. Particularly its financial implications. My perception of Labour is they have lost touch with the realities and are simply enjoying the politicking too much. Grant Robertson has been standing up and stating:
There is some truth in that for the dental profession. At LANZ.Dental we see the performance of a large number of practices and generally
yes, they are doing well. Especially those clinics outside Auckland who have been very profitable in the 12 months from June 2020. Auckland
practices have done well too, I personally billed more than ever before - but it came at a cost.
Serena and I have had no decent break outside of Christmas, we were supposed to be skiing next week! My teams are working harder and longer
than before, so it's no surprise we are seeing burnout. People are stressed with increased workloads and worries about the uncertainty of it
all. Unfortunately this is only going to get worse in the near future as we hopefully emerge from a Level 3 or 4 lockdown in Auckland.
Perception wise it's difficult for dentists to be pleading poverty or financial hardship in the media, but I see little difference between
us and hospitality. You could argue we are worse off actually, with essentially no work possible at Level 3. Same goes for many other
industries to varying degrees, construction, other allied health, the beauty industry and so on.
The wage subsidies and resurgence payments are welcomed. Hopefully if you're eligible you have applied. $600 a week is pretty tight though!
And for employers there are the complexities of distributing that; part time staff, casual staff, staff that have done some hours,
staff that can't or refuse to do any hours, etc. I had two waged staff who expected the whole wage subsidy to be paid out to them, lump sum
and in advance!
One thing I haven't heard spoken about much is the small
business cashflow scheme SBCS.
This is still available and I made good use of it in my Queenstown practice last lockdown. That practice was still new and had
debt to service. This would be useful for anyone with higher debt levels or expensive lifestyles.
Unfortunately us Aucklanders will be in lockdown for a wee while yet. But enough doom and gloom. I have plenty of exciting things
to do. Olivia and I have sold down a large percentage of our Wanaka and Queenstown practices to Andy Tapper's new organisation. I have
resigned from Lumino to concentrate on some new projects with Andy here in Auckland. I will be looking for a couple of Champagne
Socialist dentists
to join me (Raging Capitalists accepted). Drop me a line here
and watch this space for further updates.
Sneak peak at my new branding.
