Effective 10 March 2025, Immigration New Zealand has made some changes which could impact employers and Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) holders and applicants this month.
Median Wage Requirement Removal
Employers hiring through the AEWV or seasonal Specific Purpose Work Visas (SPWV) no longer need to meet a median wage threshold, except for
the New Zealand minimum wage (currently NZD $23.15 per hour). Employers must still ensure they offer pay comparable to New Zealand workers
in similar roles. The sector-specific wage exemptions will also be phased out, simplifying visa conditions.
Reduced Work Experience Requirement
The work experience requirement for migrants is dropping from 3 years to 2 years. Employers still need to confirm applicants meet this
threshold.
Changes to MSD Engagement Requirements
Employers need to declare they have advertised lower-skilled roles (SL 4 and 5) with Work and Income, and interviewed suitable candidates,
and should keep evidence of this in case it is requested later. However, they no longer need to provide evidence of their engagement in
their Job Check.
Visa Duration Increase for Lower-Skilled Workers
The duration for AEWV holders in lower-skilled jobs (ANZSCO Levels 4 and 5) will extend to 3 years, effective March 10, 2025. 2-year visa
holders may seek an extension to obtain an additional year if they remain in the same position, or an additional 3 years, if they now work
in a higher skilled position.
Further information regarding these and other changes can be found on the Immigration New Zealand website.
